Lime Plastering for Period and Heritage Properties

Traditional lime work done properly — breathable repairs, lime render, and restoration plastering for Victorian, Edwardian, and listed buildings across South London.

Lime Plastering

Why lime matters for older buildings

Most houses built before 1919 were built with lime. The walls, the mortar, the plaster — all lime-based. When you introduce modern cement or gypsum into those buildings, you create a seal that traps moisture. That moisture has to go somewhere, and it usually ends up causing damp, salt staining, or blown plaster.

Lime breathes. It allows vapour to move through the wall and evaporate naturally. Repairs done in lime will flex slightly as the building moves — something rigid gypsum can't do on an old building.

David has worked on Victorian terraces, Edwardian semis, and listed properties across South London. He understands how these buildings behave and uses the right materials for each one.

FAQ

Common questions about lime plastering

Why use lime plaster instead of gypsum?

Lime is breathable — it lets moisture move through the wall rather than trapping it. On older buildings, especially Victorian or Edwardian properties, using gypsum can cause moisture to build up behind the plaster, leading to damp. Lime plastering is the correct material for those walls.

Can you match existing lime plaster?

In most cases, yes. David will assess the existing finish — the texture, the mix, the thickness — and work to replicate it as closely as possible. On listed buildings or properties with conservation restrictions, this is especially important.

Do you work on listed buildings?

Yes. David has experience on listed and conservation properties where traditional materials and methods are required. If you need documentation for building control or your conservation officer, just ask.
